Blogs and Youtube

We have always enjoyed boating, but when we bought our first boat, an introduction to boating blogs changed the way we look at it.

A couple from our yacht club had arranged their jobs to be able to take a year off and cruise on their sailboat to the Bahamas. Before this, I had no idea that you could live on a boat that size for extended periods, or sail it from Ottawa all the way to the Caribbean. The couple published a blog, where they posted weekly updates on their trip. I read this blog on my phone while on the bus to work in the mornings, and it was an enjoyable eye-opening experience for me. I searched for other such adventures, and through this, discovered accounts of circumnavigations, and learned about the Great loop.

The blog written by our yacht club friends is no longer available, but since that time I have come across many other blogs that were interesting to read, provided useful information, and opened up a world I never knew existed – cruising on your own boat. Below are the ones that are still available online.

Another world circumnavigation. Extremely entertaining and well-written. I especially like the way he baits the trolls. The later posts are more of a travelog, but the story of their circumnavigation was awesome.

I no longer watch, as the channel has become more commercial. The old videos depicting the start of their voyage to their arrival in Europe are excellent.
